Martin Davies- Head Tutor & Founder of The Halifax Drum School

Martin’s main inspiration and the reason he took up drums has been his uncle, Harold Fisher, the legendary session drummer. It was Harold who turned Martin onto the technique of open handed playing, and his unique grip which has evolved over the decades.

080909_martin Martin turned pro at the age of 16 touring worldwide with various acts/artistes/bands, around the UK, Ireland Europe, North Africa, Australia, New Zealand and south East Asia. He has played major venues, a royal command performance, and featured on live TV appearances with numerous acts. During his career Martin has recorded for various major record companies including EMI, Universal, Decca, Heavenly, RCA, Heavenly, and Independienti.

Many of the bands & artists Martin has played with have enjoyed air play on National & international radio and MTV, his drumming has also been featured on various soundtracks for TV.

Martin gigs with jazz heavyweights Stevie Williams, The Urban Jazz Guerrillas, Gary Boyle (Isotope) Rod Mason, John Ellis, John Thorne, Steve Oaks, Gavin Barras, Simon Peats, Larry Van Kreidt, Omar Puente, Snake Davis & Helen Watson. Within the Rock /progressive field Martin has had master classes and one to ones with some of the world’s top players including Thomas Lang, Virgil Donati, Chad Wackeman & Marco Minnimum. Martin is working hard as the new drummer for One Minute Silence and writing new material for their upcoming album, and preparing to tour worldwide. He is also busy with his other project People In Jars, a post prog rock quintet, recording their new EP and also performing live sessions to be released soon.

It is this wealth of industry and performing experience that Martin aims to pass onto to all of the Halifax Drum School’s students, with endless energy, enthusiasm and commitment to help each person achieve their goals.


Conor Lawrence

Conor started playing drums at the age of 4 and started lessons at The Halifax Drum School a few years later. Since being with the HDS, Conor’s career as a drummer has evolved from playing in local brass bands to recording sessions and tours around Britain and Europe.
Conor started gigging the local circuit at the age of 15, and since establishing himself has gigged all over the country and across Europe with his band The Horn And The Hunt as well as country bands; Des Horsfall & Kuschty Rye.

Conor is currently playing with 90’s band Republica and plays regular high profile venues and festivals including The Isle Of Wight Festival.

Conor also has worked with producers Simon Humphries (The clash, N-Dubz, The Shadows, T-Rex) Andy Ramsey (Stereolab, Add N To X) and played with a varying range of artistes including James Atkins (EMF) Justin Welch (Elastica) Damo Suzuki (Can) & Jean Herve-Peron (Faust).
